ACC Initiatives
In this new regular series, we will feature digital initiatives and innovations by the ACC that are aligned towards meeting the educational and clinical needs of members. Developed through member engagement and feedback, featured initiatives are geared towards CV professionals at all stages of their career. These resources have made the ACC a trusted source of consumable knowledge that is integrated with the daily activities of the CV team and fully accessible when needed.
Featured Initiative: Podcasts
Developed in the early 2000s as a form of “audio blogging”, podcasts are now a multi-billion-dollar industry. The term podcast is a combination of “iPod” and “broadcast”, as the first podcasts became available on the audio player in form of radio shows. In the present day, there are well over 100 million podcast listeners in the United States, and the average American tunes into 8 podcasts a week.
Podcasts offer the advantage of learning on the go that is accessible to anyone with a smartphone. They have been utilized as an outlet for education and discussion by several scientific journals. The ACC has developed 6 podcasts that are available on various platforms including Apple Music, Spotify and Audible.
MO ACC Connect team created a summary of ACC podcasts for its readers, highlighting the diversity in terms of content and depth. All ACC podcasts are free for members and nonmembers.
ACCEL Lite: Featured ACCEL interviews on Exciting CV Research
Hosted by ACCEL Editor-in-Chief Alison L. Bailey, MD, FACC, FACCPVR, this weekly podcast offers summaries and select interviews of cardiology’s latest and most interesting research areas. The first episode was released in 2017, and in 2023 the podcast evolved into its current version with shorter episodes. With an average length of 10-15 minutes, this podcast makes for a great go-to your commute to work. At year end, the podcast features summary episodes discussing the top takeaways of the calendar year. MO ACC member Dr. Andrew Kates was featured in an episode on the Top Takeaways of General Cardiology in 2024 and discussed the 2024 Perioperative Guidelines, cardiac rehab, ACC’s proposal for a new Board of Cardiovascular Medicine, and more.
Eagle’s Eye View: Your Weekly CV Update from ACC.org
Recorded by renowned educator and researcher Kim Eagle MD, MACC, this weekly podcast reviews the hottest cardiovascular topics, including the latest clinical guidelines, practice changing research and newest quality initiatives and tools. With an average length of less than 10 minutes, Dr. Eagle is typically able to provide an overview of up to 3 topics per episode, covering an extensive breadth of relevant cardiovascular updates. He also provides year end and conference summaries for the ACC and AHA. Listening to this podcast is a great way to stay in the know.- JACC Podcast
Recorded by renowned researcher, educator and Editor Emeritus of JACC, Valentin Fuster, MD, PhD, MACC, this weekly podcast provides a summary of findings from JACC (Journal of American College of Cardiology) and the JACC journal family consisting of 9 subspecialty journals. Dr. Fuster provides an overview of the weekly edition as well as a summary of each manuscript. With episodes generally just under an hour in length, this is an opportunity for a deeper dive into the latest cardiovascular research. Current JACC editor-in-chief Harlan M. Krumholz MD, DM, FACC also provides editor’s page summary with an overview of the articles included in JACC.
- ACC CardiaCast
This is an occasional series which makes for a valuable learning tool. It features interview with known experts in the field and reviews relevant clinical research. The average length of each episode is approximately 25 minutes each, and the format is high yield from an educational standpoint. This is a versatile podcast featuring different subspecialties and has “something for everyone” with several regularly featured series within the podcast such as -
- "Courtside with the Chair” is a series within CardiaCast presented by the Sports and Exercise Cardiology Member Section covering topics within the field of sports and exercise cardiology.
- Special Edition: “PulseCheck” is a series within CardiaCast that is designed for CV Team members, offering practical team-based solutions to the everyday challenges.
- “Heart Vision” is a CardiaCast podcast series stemming from the ACC Cardiovascular Imaging Section Leadership Council. This podcast series tackles topics on emerging multimodality imaging data, trends, practice patterns, disease status and advocacy effort.
- “Women are Not Little Men” is a podcast series within CardiaCast designed for cardiovascular health providers to increase awareness of sex-based differences in cardiovascular disease (CVD) and to improve the clinical care of women with CVD.
Practice Made Perfect
This occasional series from the ACC is unique as it is the only non-clinical focused podcast. It features conversational style interviews discussing nonclinical competencies, skills, wellbeing and best practices for the entire heart team. With an average episode length of 25 minutes, this podcast has covered a diverse range of topics from financial freedom to pursuing your hobbies and manuscript writing. It has a “for the member by the members” format and the episodes are highly engaging. Several episodes have been sponsored by the Women in Cardiology (WIC) Section of the ACC. MO ACC Governor Toniya Singh MBBS, FACC featured in an episode of the podcast on choosing a new practice partner, during her term as Chair of WIC section.
JACC Specialty Journals
In this podcast series, editors-in-chief from the JACC family of 9 specialty journals provide highlights and summarize key findings for select issues. Published online every 2 weeks with episodes that are less than 10 minutes in length, tuning into these podcasts are a great way to stay updated on the go. Summaries provided include state-of-art-papers, original clinical research, translational research with clear clinical relevance and review articles. With nearly 1600 diverse episodes available for listening, this podcast offers a meaningful experience to every listener.
